Excavation, Grading & Utility Contractor in Custer, SD

Black Hills site work — rock excavation, steep-lot access, utilities and drainage around Custer.

Unlimited Grading & Utility LLC works throughout Custer, South Dakota and Custer County — building pad grading on steep and rocky Black Hills lots, rock excavation and ripping, water and septic site work, utility trenching, driveway and access road construction, land clearing and defensible space thinning, and drainage.

Custer-area ground is the hardest in our service area to build on: granite close to the surface, serious slopes, and tight forested lots. That is exactly the work 25 years of Black Hills experience is for. Call 605-381-6458.

Building on Black Hills terrain

A lot near Custer rarely gives you a flat, soft place to build. Expect exposed or shallow granite, slopes that require benched cuts and engineered fill, mature ponderosa pine that has to come off the footprint, and a long driveway that has to climb without washing out. We plan those lots around the rock and the water rather than fighting both at the same time.

That means probing conditions before pricing, ripping and hammering rather than promising a clean dig, and laying out access with cross-drainage built in from the start.

Tourism-driven commercial and cabin construction

Custer County sees steady construction pressure from the visitor economy around Custer State Park and the southern Hills — cabins, short-term rentals, lodging, campgrounds, and small commercial buildings. Those projects need pads, water and septic site work, parking and access, and stormwater handled on constrained sites. We work with owners, builders, and general contractors on that scale of job.

Answers

Custer — questions we get asked

Can you excavate through rock near Custer?

Yes. Shallow granite and limestone are the norm in the southern Black Hills, and we run excavators with hydraulic hammers and rippers to cut basements, trenches, and road grade through it. Rock work is slower and priced accordingly, so we probe conditions during the site visit instead of guessing.

Do you build driveways on steep Black Hills lots?

Yes, and drainage is what makes them last. Steep access roads need a crown or cross-slope, cross-drainage or armored ditches so runoff does not cut them apart, adequate base for the grade, and sometimes benched cuts or retaining. We also account for emergency-vehicle access requirements where they apply.

Do you do defensible space clearing around cabins?

Yes. We thin and clear to reduce fuel load around homes, cabins, and outbuildings, remove downed and hazard trees, grub stumps, and haul or mulch the material. On wooded Hills property this is one of the highest-value things an owner can do.
