What grading and site preparation includes
Grading is the process of reshaping raw ground into engineered surfaces that drain correctly and support structures. Every job we run is built from the same core set of operations, scaled to the project:
- Topsoil stripping and stockpiling — organics removed from the building footprint and saved on site for later spreading
- Mass excavation — bulk dirt moved to bring the site down to design subgrade
- Cut and fill balancing — moving material within the site to reduce haul-off and import costs
- Rock excavation and ripping — breaking and removing shallow bedrock and hardpan common across the Black Hills
- Structural fill placement and compaction — engineered lifts placed and compacted to spec for building pads
- Haul off and import fill — trucking surplus material away or bringing in select fill and aggregate
- Rough and finish grading — establishing slopes, swales, and positive drainage away from structures

Grading around Black Hills soils and terrain
Western South Dakota ground is not forgiving. Expansive clay swells when it takes on water and shrinks when it dries, which is what moves footings and cracks slabs years after a build. Shallow granite and limestone can turn a routine basement dig into a ripping job. Steep, wooded Black Hills lots need benched cuts and engineered slopes rather than a straight push.
We account for that up front: moisture-conditioning fill before compaction, undercutting and replacing unsuitable material where needed, tracking density as we build lifts, and grading positive fall away from every foundation so water leaves the site instead of sitting against it.

How much does site grading cost in Rapid City?
Grading is priced by the scope of the work, not by a flat rate. The variables that move the number most are the volume of material to be moved, whether cut and fill can be balanced on site or dirt has to be hauled off or imported, how much rock is in the way, access for equipment, and how much clearing has to happen first. We walk the site, look at your plans and any soils report, and give you a written number rather than a guess over the phone.
How long does it take to grade a building pad?
A straightforward residential building pad on open ground is often a two to five day operation. Steep or wooded lots, sites with significant rock, and jobs that need imported structural fill take longer. Commercial and subdivision-scale mass excavation is scheduled in weeks. Weather and frost are the biggest schedule risks in this region, so we build float into the plan.
Do I need a permit for grading in Pennington County or Rapid City?
It depends on the scope and location. Work inside Rapid City city limits, work that disturbs larger areas, work in a floodplain, and work that alters drainage generally triggers permitting or a stormwater plan. We are used to working inside these requirements and will tell you what your project needs before we mobilize, but the permit is ultimately issued to the property owner or general contractor.
Can you grade a lot in the winter?
Often yes, but with limits. Frozen ground can be ripped and moved, but you cannot place and compact structural fill in frozen material and expect it to hold density. We typically front-load pad work in the open season and use winter months for clearing, demolition, rock work, and stockpiling.
