Unlimited Grading & Utility LLC builds and maintains roads throughout Rapid City, Black Hawk, the Black Hills, Philip, Custer, Hot Springs, and Gillette, Wyoming. We build subdivision street subgrade, private and shared driveways, ranch and field access roads, and industrial haul roads — and we maintain existing gravel roads with grading, re-crowning, ditching, and fresh aggregate.
A gravel road only survives if water gets off it. Crown, ditch, and the right base material do more for a road's life than the depth of gravel on top. Call 605-381-6458.
Road construction and maintenance services
New construction or bringing a failing road back:
- Road building — clearing, subgrade preparation, embankment, and aggregate surfacing
- Subdivision street subgrade — cut to grade and compacted for the paving contractor
- Driveways and private access roads — residential, shared, and long rural drives
- Ranch, field, and haul roads — durable all-weather access on working ground
- Gravel road grading and re-crowning — restoring shape, removing washboard and potholes
- Aggregate base and subbase placement — graded and compacted base course
- Ditching and shoulder work — cutting and shaping ditches to move water off the road
- Culvert installation on road crossings — sized and set with proper end treatment
- Rock excavation and ripping — cutting road grade through shallow bedrock
Why gravel roads fail — and what actually fixes them
Almost every failing gravel road in this region fails for the same reason: water is standing on it or in it. The crown has flattened out so water sheets down the wheel tracks instead of off the edges. The ditches have silted in so the water has nowhere to go. The surface material has too many fines, so it turns to grease when wet and washboards when dry.
Adding more gravel to a road with no crown and no ditch is throwing money into a puddle. We re-establish the crown, cut the ditches back open, blade out the washboard rather than just skimming the tops off it, and place surfacing material with the right gradation to bind and shed water.
Seasonal and ongoing road maintenance
Roads on working property need maintenance on a rhythm, not just when they get bad enough to complain about. Spring thaw and heavy summer rain are what tear them up. We work with homeowners associations, ranches, developers, and commercial property owners on scheduled blading and re-graveling, so a road gets attention before it needs to be rebuilt.
Answers
Road Building & Road Maintenance — questions we get asked
How often should a gravel road be graded?
Most gravel roads in western South Dakota benefit from grading at least twice a year — once after spring thaw and once late in the season — with additional passes after heavy rain or on high-traffic roads. Roads with a proper crown and open ditches need noticeably less attention than roads that have gone flat, which is why fixing the shape is a better investment than blading a bad profile more often.
What kind of gravel should go on a driveway?
Generally a graded aggregate base with a mix of coarse stone and fines that will bind and compact, not clean round rock that stays loose and pushes around under tires. On soft subgrade a coarser subbase or a geotextile separation fabric goes down first so the surfacing does not just disappear into the mud. We recommend material based on your subgrade, slope, and traffic.
Can you build a road up a steep Black Hills lot?
Usually, yes — but grade, switchbacks, drainage, and rock all have to be worked out first. Steep access roads need cross-drainage and armored ditches so runoff does not cut them apart, and they may need retaining or benched cuts. Emergency-vehicle access requirements can also constrain maximum grade and turning radius. We walk the route and lay out something that will still be there in ten years.
Do you build haul roads for commercial and industrial sites?
Yes. Haul and access roads for construction sites, gravel pits, industrial yards, and energy and utility projects get built for load, not looks — proper subgrade, adequate base thickness, drainage that survives truck traffic, and turnarounds sized for the equipment actually using them.
